The documentary follows ‘The Minimalists’, American duo Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, authors, podcasters, filmmakers, and public speakers as they tour America promoting their book ‘All That Remains’. The pair started their work in 2010 after experiencing significant improvements in their quality of life as a result of adopting and practising the principles of minimalism.
In the film, Joshua and Ryan, both 35, talk about how they went from being stressed out compulsive shoppers, who filled the void in their lives with consumerism, to happy minimalists, before looking inside the lives of minimalists from all walks of life. Families, entrepreneurs, tiny house architects, artists, journalists, scientists, and even a former Wall Street broker talk about how they have found happiness by having less.
Among those interviewed are architect Frank Mascia, who explains that “nothing is more responsible than living in the smallest space you possibly can”, and David Friedlander of minimalist design firm Life Edited, who cites research showing that people only use 40% of the space in their homes. This is immediately followed by interviews from Tammy Stobel, author of ‘You can buy happiness (and it’s cheap)’, who liberated herself by moving into a tiny house, and tiny-home designer Jay Austin, who lives in a 143 square foot tiny house that cost him $50k. The tiny houses are built on wheeled platforms to avoid the requirement to meet space standards and typically feature a living space with a kitchenette, shower room and a mezzanine sleeping area.
We have long known the benefits of smaller homes and a lifestyle of minimalism. At circa 320 square foot, our one-bedroom apartments are large by tiny house standards, but ultimately what matters is how you use the space. High tech, high spec features such as Smart NEST thermostats, superfast broadband, granite worktops, Bosch kitchen appliances and designer bathrooms mean our buyers live in style but at a price that’s affordable.
