Green light for £1.4bn Westfield Croydon shopping centre

The new £1.4bn Westfield Croydon shopping centre was given the green light by Croydon Council's planning committee.

The new £1.4bn Westfield Croydon shopping centre was given the green light by Croydon Council’s planning committee at a meeting last night.

Westfield Croydon to open in 2022…

The plans will see the Whitgift Shopping Centre redeveloped by the Croydon Partnership – a joint venture between Westfield and Hammerson.

Work on Westfield Croydon will start in 2019 and will bring over 300 shops, restaurants, cafés and leisure facilities including a multi-screen cinema and bowling alley when it opens in 2022. The plans also include 1,000 new homes.

What the council leader said…

Commenting on the decision, Councillor Tony Newman, leader of Croydon Council, said: “This is fantastic news for Croydon and we have been doing everything we can to bring the redevelopment of the Whitgift Centre to fruition so local people can benefit from its wealth of offerings, including the creation of 7,000 new jobs. I’m pleased we have reached this major milestone in the delivery of a world class retail and leisure facility and it’s another step to reinforcing Croydon’s growing reputation as one of London’s top destinations.”

What the partnership said…

John Burton OBE, Westfield UK/ Europe’s head of development, added: “The approval of the £1.4bn plans to redevelop the Whitgift Centre represents a significant milestone for the project and for Croydon. Retail-regeneration projects have a proven track record to deliver transformation and regeneration which is evidenced by the £5.25bn of inward investment planned for Croydon.”

Peter Cole, chief investment officer of Hammerson, commented: “Our goal remains to deliver a world-class retail and leisure destination to attract new visitors to Croydon and enhance economic growth in the town. We are pleased with the level of retail demand which has driven the evolution of the design and layout of the new scheme, and we look forward to progressing our plans and transforming Croydon into one of the UK’s top 10 retail and leisure destinations.”

What our CEO said…

Martin Skinner, chief executive officer at Inspired Homes, said: “I believe this decision will be the most important development in Croydon’s recent history, propelling the town to a new level in terms of new jobs, vast inward investment and economic growth. Westfield UK has proved itself to be the single most powerful tool for regeneration and economic growth and Croydon, with its excellent transport links and buzzing café culture, is the ideal location for its next venture.

“Interest from Westfield UK was the reason that Inspired Homes invested in Croydon four years ago and it is with great excitement and optimism that I see this commitment to the Borough come to fruition. Croydon’s reinvention as a creative hotspot and tech hub has already transformed its reputation but the arrival of Westfield Croydon will seal its status as one of London’s most exciting and vibrant destinations. Almost every buyer that enquires asks when or even if Westfield Croydon is coming and it is probably the single biggest reason why they choose Croydon.”
