Inspired Series – Interview with Marissa Montgomery: From founding global fashion brands to featuring in Forbes 30 under 30

Marissa Montgomery

Marissa Montgomery has inherited a true entrepreneurial flair from both of her parents, and has proven herself in one of the most competitive industries…Fashion.

Her father is the legendary photographer David Montgomery who is famous for working with everyone from Jimi Hendrix to The Rolling Stones, and her mother, Martine Montgomery, is an absolute PR guru who owns M&M Management.

Marissa Montgomery epitomizes business-focused young London, having founded the lingerie line Pussy Glamore which quickly found its way into leading boutiques and stores and was worn by London’s fashion’s elite. As well as being a successful business woman who’s secured clients including Cara Delevingne and Leighton Meester, Marissa has launched a career in television.

Could you start by telling us a bit about yourself and what you’ve been up to recently?

I moved back to London 2 years ago, after working as a designer at Victoria’s Secret in New York. I then launched clothing brand, Rotten Roach with a friend, focusing on the idea of creating wearable art .Most recently, I am proud to say that I have been included in the Forbes ’30 under 30′, which was a great way to start the new year .

You were very young when you founded your lingerie business, Pussy Glamore. How did this develop from an idea to a reality?

I was studying English and Drama at Goldsmiths, and wanted to create something fun to do in my spare time . It’s amazing how the more you talk to people, the more you learn . I knew nothing about creating underwear, but quickly learnt from talking to whoever would give me their time . I registered a trademark, got all my friends on board to make prints , model , take pictures etc and that was the start of everything.

When did you actually decide on what you wanted to do with your career and recognise your entrepreneurial streak?

I always loved making things, from cakes to customizing tees . My family is super creative, so my time was always spent in art galleries or around artists, photographers actors and wildly creative people, so I didn’t really know anything else . I always wanted to make things, it just happened that I started with underwear .

You were also invited to co-host America’s Next Top Model – how did that come about and what was the experience like?

I do a lot of TV hosting on the side and was doing NYLON TV at the time for New York Fashion Week. They were the filming with ANTM, so I was asked to come on board. It was great fun going to LA and shooting in the house with all the girls for an episode .

Your work in fashion has also led you to into television presenting, where you have interviewing the likes of Cara Delevigne and Zac Posen. Could you tell us a bit more about this and what you learnt by speaking to so many influential people?

It’s great to hear inspiring stories from people at the top of their field , and is lots of fun doing interviews on the go . You learn so much !

What has been your career high and low?

I think it’s still too early in my career to say .

Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Follow up with everyone and always remember to say thank you . When you are starting a business you need a lot of good will in the bank .

We are of course a property company, and therefore love all thing to do with houses and interior design. Where is home for you currently?

London and I love it

What is the 5 year plan?

Work hard , be creative , create things i’m proud of .
