Young couple take micro steps to get onto property ladder

Jess Albone, 23, a digital marketing executive, and Jake Brown, 24, a customer service executive, purchased a one-bedroom micro-apartment at Green Dragon House in Croydon for £289,950.

The couple took advantage of Help to Buy London to purchase a new home with a £20k deposit, 40% equity loan from the Government and a mortgage for the remaining £153,970. Originally from Colchester in Essex, the couple moved to London nearly three years ago and found life in house shares depressing. They chose Green Dragon House because of its affordability, high spec and impressive resident facilities.

“Being able to shut the front door and switch off from the world in a place you can call your own has been totally life-changing for us,” comments Jess.

Winner of two First Time Buyer Reader’s Awards and a WhatHouse? Bronze, Green Dragon House by Inspired Homes benefits from a 10th-floor sky terrace, table tennis room and WiFi-ready residents’ lounge with a cinema area.

By building smaller units, Inspired are able to offer new homes at lower prices than typical new-builds in the same location. The idea of owning a small but neat, high tech, high spec space appeals to first-time buyers such as Jess and Jake, who with more possessions like music and film collections stored in the Cloud, now place greater importance on broadband speed than shelf space.

The one-bedroom apartments are typically 30m2 (323sqft) to 37m2 (398sqft), with two-beds between 40m2 (430sqft) and 52m2 (560sqft). Yet – with a hallway-free design, open-plan living areas and often the addition of balconies, the apartments look and feel more spacious than the square footage suggests, while bedrooms easily accommodate a 4ft 6in double bed.

Green Dragon House is now fully sold, but we still have apartments remaining at our nearby Central Cross and Innova developments. Comprising 90 one, two and three bedroom apartments in the heart of Croydon’s Restaurant Quarter, each property benefits from a superb specification featuring engineered hardwood flooring, Smart thermostats by NEST, 1 Gig Hyperoptic broadband, Bosch kitchen appliances, granite worktops and Villeroy & Boch bathrooms.

Prices start at £282,950 and Help to Buy London is available offering buyers a 40% Government equity loan interest free for five years. Call the sales team on 0208 688 6552 to enquire.
