Earlier this month, our Chief Executive Martin Skinner visited Onside Youth Zone’s Wirral Youth Zone where he was given a tour by David Mellis, who is responsible for Private Sector Partnerships at the charity.
Named by young people as ‘The Hive’, the state-of-the-art youth zone provides a gym; sports hall; outdoor football pitch; boxing ring; arts & crafts, music and media rooms; a dance studio; climbing wall; and skate park. What more do you need!
Better still, Onside’s youth zones cost just £5 for an annual membership with a further 50p per visit. The youth zones are exclusively for young people aged 8 to 19, but this is increased to 25 for those with disabilities. However, envious adults can still use the facilities if they work at the youth zones as volunteers helping the Onside team with the various classes and activities on offer.
There are almost 40,000 10-19-year olds in Wirral and the youth zone already has 6,000 members having only opened in April last year.
Wirral has the second highest concentration of worklessness in disadvantaged communities in England with just over 24.6% of young people living in poverty, so the youth zone was a much needed and welcomed facility for the community.
Excited by the work of Onside and with our ties to Croydon, Inspired Homes signed up to be a Founder Patron of the new Croydon Youth Zone on Whitehorse Road in Thornton Heath, which is due to be completed in 2019. We will keep everyone updated with the progress of this new youth zone right here on our blog. In the meantime, you can watch the video below of Martin’s visit to ‘The Hive’.
